Predicting avian herbivore responses to changing food availability and competition

چکیده
Many species of large herbivore rely on agricultural land for their feeding habitats, but available food resources are highly variable in space and time. The conservation management farmland-dependant herbivores would therefore benefit from predictions about how will respond to changes environment. We developed an individual-based model (IBM) provide such three overwintering avian that feed land: Bewick's swans (Cygnus columbianus bewickii), whooper cygnus), mute olor). Our validated predicted potential future availability competition affect (i) the proportion current swan population could be supported, (ii) successfully departed migration at end winter, (iii) daily foraging effort, (iv) late winter crop biomasses. Regardless competitor numbers or availability, all individuals were avoid starvation depart successfully. Individual offset higher reduced by increasing daylight spent foraging. simulations indicate have considerable capacity buffer against losses increased this may result additional grazing damage crops. findings suggest recent c.40% decline was unlikely linked competition.

متن کاملCompetition and coexistence in grassland codominants: responses to neighbour removal and resource availability
We examined the role of interspecific competition in the regulation of abundance and coexistence of the dominant grasses in tallgrass prairie using a removal experiment with Andropogon gerardii Vitman and Sorghastrum nutans L. Nash, two of the most abundant grasses in tallgrass prairie. Plant removal treatments (using foliar herbicide), applied to 0.3-m2 plots at the Konza Prairie Biological St...
متن کاملNatal Host Plants Can Alter Herbivore Competition
Interspecific competition between herbivores is widely recognized as an important determinant of community structure. Although researchers have identified a number of factors capable of altering competitive interactions, few studies have addressed the influence of neighboring plant species. If adaptation to/ epigenetic effects of an herbivore's natal host plant alter its performance on other ho...
متن کاملIndependent responses to ultraviolet radiation and herbivore attack in broccoli
The plant responses to ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B) and to insect herbivory are believed to be partially similar. In this study, responses to these factors were investigated in the crop species broccoli (Brassica oleracea L. convar. botrytis, Brassicaceae). Plants were first grown under three UV-B regimes (80%, 23%, and 4% transmittance of ambient UV-B) in greenhouses covered with either inno...
متن کاملRelationship between avian growth rate and immune response depends on food availability.
Life history theory predicts that when resources are limited growing organisms are likely to trade an immune response for competing demands of growth. To test this we examined the effect of energy intake on body mass increments and an immune response in hand-reared sand martin (Riparia riparia) nestlings. We subjected the nestlings to three different feeding regimes, mimicking the range of food...
